James McClure at the opening of the "Step up to
the Plate"
I have a great love of working with my hands and making things. This was instilled at a young age by my father who always had a shop full of tools and was working on a project or two. After the purchase of a home in 1995, I started remodeling, making furniture, and doing general woodworking projects. A few years later, I caught the turning bug after seeing a demonstration at a local woodworking store. I became a serious student of woodturning and started attending symposia, reading books and watching videos, attending demonstrations and classes. The highlights were attending David Ellsworth's School of Woodturning in June 2005 and his masterclass at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in August 2009. I attended the American Association of Woodturners National Symposium in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, 2009; the Florida Woodturning Symposium in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009; and the Turning Southern Style Symposium in 2007 and 2008. I teach woodturning classes and served as president of the Artistic Woodturners of Northwest Florida for three years from 2004 to 2007. I have memberships with the American Association of Woodturners, The Woodturning Center, The American Craft Council, The Pensacola Museum of Art, The Mobile Museum of Art, and the Artel Gallery
