Introduction to Turned Boxes

Learn techniques and skills required for making lidded boxes on the lathe. Topics for discussion include wood selection and preparation, lid fitting options, box design and proportions for aesthetics and usability, strategies for grain alignment, making and attaching knobs and finials, and an introduction to surface decoration such as chatterwork, beads, and other enhancements. You will turn a box with from start to finish and in the process learn techniques for shaping the box, fitting the lid, end grain hollowing, and making jam chucks to hold the lid and base for final shaping.
