James McClure
Sculpture & Woodturning

Artist Statement:

My sculptures are explorations.  They explore the properties of wood, shapes, colors, grain patterns, balance, and movement.  My pieces are assembled from components which are produced using a wood lathe and woodworking tools.  I often use materials other than wood in my work such as gold leaf, paint, dye, wire, stones, and various found objects.  The sphere and cylinder are important building blocks in my work.  They are used as representations of many things such as completeness, serenity, goals, chaos, or perfection.  Likewise, broken or misshapen objects in my work can represent absence or striving.  The bowl is also an import component in my work.  Bowls are so familiar and commonplace.  We have all been around bowls our entire lives.  However, by using the bowl form as a sculptural element, they can represent us, our goals, our failures, or our dreams.
