Following are the class descriptions for the classes that I teach at the Woodcraft Store in Mobile, AL.

Introduction to Bowl Turning I

Learn how to turn bowls on the wood lathe with effective tool techniques that will make turning bowls fun.  The class will outline topics such as log handling, wood selection, blank preparation, rough turning and drying, and tool sharpening. In the hands-on portion of the class, I will show the various cuts possible with the “Ellsworth grind” bowl gouge and how they are used to turn a bowl.  You will turn your own bowl from start to finish.  Other topics covered include sanding, how to get rid of the tenon on the bottom of the bowl, and finishing. If able, students should bring their own bowl gouge. Bowl blanks will be provided.

Introduction to Bowl Turning II

This class is a continuation of the Introduction To Bowl Turning I class.  Techniques learned in the first class are refined and reinforced as you learn to turn a natural edged bowl. The class will outline topics such as how to turn bowls with nice shapes and pleasing form, how to cut blanks from a log to get the most effective grain patterns, and how end grain versus side grain wood orientation applies to turning bowls.  If time permits, you can turn two bowls during this session.  Other topics covered include an introduction to contemporary artistic woodturning and the techniques it employs such as coloring, painting, carving, burning, and texturing.  Get the complete introduction to bowl turning by taking both classes.  Bowl blanks will be provided.

Introduction to Turned Boxes

Learn techniques and skills required for making lidded boxes on the lathe. Topics for discussion include wood selection and preparation, lid fitting options, box design and proportions for aesthetics and usability, strategies for grain alignment, making and attaching knobs and finials, and an introduction to surface decoration such as chatterwork, beads, and other enhancements. You will turn a box with from start to finish and in the process learn techniques for shaping the box, fitting the lid, end grain hollowing, and making jam chucks to hold the lid and base for final shaping.
